What CMS? WordPress vs Joomla vs Drupal
By Matthew Buckland, Memeburn
It's the big question. I had the opportunity to work three of these Content Management Systems (CMS) in various forms, and in my opinion - from the perspective of online publication - there is no clear winner. Everyone has their favorite and there is no doubt that people vehemently disagree, but listen.
First to Joomla and Drupal: Both Joomla and Drupal CMS are complex, and I I felt that CMS is designed by technologists for technologists. When using these CMS systems, one gets the feeling that the editorial CMS was the priority 2 compared to its basic function is ultimately to get content on the web. I have also found that user interfaces and menu structures of these sites are outdated, busy and too complex. (Admittedly I've only worked with earlier versions of Drupal.) Use only the CMS if you have a good technical team and are willing to delve into the guts of the thing from time to time.
So it's not WordPress. For a while, I never had considered WordPress as a CMS for a publishing site, as I had always seen as a blogging platform mainly specialized. But this does not happen again and in fact may be a generalist WordPress CMS itself, with the added blog functionality (eg, trackbacks, pingbacks, etc, etc). In fact it may be the subject WordPress to work for a magazine site quite complex or even a news site. This is a new wave of using WordPress really only recently began to take off.
The simplicity of WordPress and focus on the basics of online publication that makes a good choice as a CMS for me. Zen and minimalist is the CMS oriented towards the most important task at hand: the publication.
If you have some level of criticism: one might say you could say WordPress is too simple for large sites - and that is a fair criticism. For very large and complex sites, it is likely that none of the three above CMS is fully adequate. In fact, it is wise to create your own custom CMS to adapt to the nuances and demands of your business, especially if it focuses on its core business.
