How do I backup WordPress blog before upgrading to the new version of WordPress?

I have a wordpress.org blog. I just received a message that I have to upgrade wordpress to 3.1.3. I also advised a copy of my first database. I realized through self-organized of bluehost.com. How to make a backup? The important thing is to keep the text and photos. Any recommendations / suggestions? Thank you.

The messages and photos are stored separately. If graphics are stored in a directory called "wp-images" or something like that, just download the folder (via FTP) to your desktop. Backup database is more complicated. I use a plugin called wp-db-backup, which does the dirty work for me. As a practical matter, there is not much risk in the management of the upgrade, even automatically - I never had any problems updating three WordPress blogs on a regular basis since the automatic update function was introduced about 2.7 - but I still do backups of the database. (I keep a duplicate folder of images on my desk, so any missing graphics can be quickly replaced.)
