Going from HTML to WordPress, and work behind the scenes?

I have a website that is lived and based on CSS and HTML, but I really like to do most of the CMS, so I went with the basics of WordPress, I like some of the templates I've seen and what your needs now. My question is how I can work on my site if I'm installing WordPress on public folder for everyone to see. In HTML you can still work on your site as your list will only change their pages index.html and BAM! Now your life. I would like the wordpress living and still have as a next page or a page under construction. Anyone who gets I'm trying to say?? Im not new to the codes and stuff, but news of how wordpress, I am familiar with Joomla, Drupal, so you can be very different, but I'm sure you have your settings. Any help would be great!, Thanks

If you are using an Apache server (which is likely), create a file called. htaccess (yes point htaccess) in the root directory of the site. Yes. Htaccess already exists, just add to it. . The htaccess file, write this new line: DirectoryIndex comingsoon.html Rename the existing index.html page (which contains the "soon" message) to comingsoon.html When your site is ready to go live, to reopen the file. htaccess file and remove the DirectoryIndex line. I hope I understood your question.
