How do you know the difference between the registration of new users and spam?

In wordpress, I in my self-hosted blog, I have sometimes 30 to 60 "new users' communications records. Although I like to think that all or some of them are human beings (which unfortunately, most of all they are not, I think) I'm pretty sure most are robots. How can you tell the difference between an actual record of new user (s) and related to the bot registration. I've been reading on ways to prevent spam bot registration (as a catcher and plugins).
