How can you use a QR code on learning?

OK - I am one of those people who likes to see the latest technological trends early. I do not know if that makes me a geek or a trendsetter. The last thing I've been seeing is the QR code. They are everywhere - commercials, t-shirts, newspapers, websites, business cards ....

I wonder how long will it be before we begin to see QR codes embedded in apprenticeship programs. Many designers love to try learning new technology as soon possible, so you are bound to see in an apprenticeship program soon.

What is a QR code?

That's what that most people said when asked if he could see how we can use a learning. QR codes are two-dimensional bar codes that can contain any alphanumeric text and often URLs features. These are read by QR code readers on smartphones. QR codes were invented in Japan and are very popular there. The use of QR codes is now spreading rapidly through Europe and now spreading across America.

In my research on this topic, I found a few references to the universities with QR codes, but not much on the corporate use. This is an example of what I found:

  • Roper Matt Ramsden and Andy have a presentation on the use of QR codes at the University of Bath. It was an interesting presentation, but few ideas in depth. New research, I learned that they have a scholarship to investigate the use of QR codes in learning.
  • QR Codes have been used in the public space for education about the physical elements on the screen. Uses may include plants in the Botanical Gardens or painting in a museum. People can scan the code for a link to a deeper understanding of the physical item.
  • Educators using QR codes to do "search treasure 'in the classroom.
  • Educators using QR codes in various media booklets to save paper.
  • I even found an Australian physical education teacher who created a "Geocache" adventure type using a GPS device and QR codes for their students.

According to Dawn Gartine, an expert in social media and learning ", an important consideration for the use of QR codes is to ensure that members the public have a smartphone. You may consider pairs or teams. But look for the numbers keep changing as more and more people buy smartphones. "

How do I get a reader?

Smartphones can have applications downloaded to your phone. I just went to the App Store on iPhone and sought "QR code" and found several options for readers. Once you've downloaded, just launch the application, select your camera in any QR code (even below), and obtain information on your phone as a link or a phone number. Once you're aware of the QR codes you start to notice everywhere - on business cards, marketing brochures, and even in ads TV.

How to generate your own code:

Just Google "QR code generator."

You can have the code:

  • open a url
  • display text
  • call a phone number
  • or send a specific SMS number to a specific cell

Some ideas for using QR codes in learning:

I see many ways of using QR codes in marketing. Even I can see some ways we can use these codes in learning, but I would like open the conversation for more ideas. These are the few I've brainstormed:

1. Include the code on "How To" job aids. A technician field can scan the code to see a video showing an in-depth task.

2. Place the code on the computer. So instead of aid for the print job, users can scan the code for troubleshooting information or instructions.

3. Place a scan code in e-learning courses or printed material to release a video with more versions of the story, a white paper, or perhaps display a list of related courses.

4. Facilitators can put your contact information into a code scanner on the PowerPoint presentation.

5. Links to the instruments course evaluation can be accessed through a QR code.

6. Computer training centers could include QR codes tuition in each piece of equipment.

7. Training centers could include a QR code on the door of each room that allows someone to make a room reservation, while standing in front of him - just using your smartphone.

8. Enroll in a class with a QR code.

9. Create a search real treasure of the students in the physical world. Each track is a QR code that leads to the following QR Code - having to learn the physical space instead of virtual space. I found a free software application called 2D mobile game that lets you create urban games. It contains a table of leaders, maps with the locations of 2D codes, and a list of tracks. My plan is to try it very soon.

10. Links to assessment tools such as test questions.

11. Save paper by putting links to tasks, charts, slides for future reference in the PowerPoint presentation. Students can explore to get the link and reference after the class, as needed.

12 Use a QR code to probe the kind of immediate information about whether your message is getting through. It can be used in any class more to ensure that everything goes well and be able to adapt as needed.

13. Use a QR code to launch a signal in the form of the class. Also used to ensure that everyone has the QR code reader on their smartphones for the rest of the class and show the newbies how to use it.

href = "http://ileighanne.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/qr-code-with-iphone.jpg"> my own opinion:

If used properly, these could be useful additions to our toolbox of blended learning. We can start a new process to link thinking around education and information physical space. That could be used to discover new ways for experiential learning. They provide us the opportunity to move away from the keyboard eLearning and mouse and in the real world.

I'm not sure the QR Code is the final version of this technology, but opens the door to a new way of thinking learning about design. As more and more people move to smartphones, more and more opportunities for innovation are mLearning creating.
