1. Basic technical optimization
Out of the box, WordPress is a fairly well optimized, and does a much better job of allowing each page to be indexed to all others who have used CMS. But there are some things you should do to make it even easier to work.
1.1. Permalinks
The first thing to change is the permalink structure. In WordPress 2.5, you'll find on this page, under Settings -> Permalinks. The default is permalink
? P =, but I prefer to use / post-name / or / category / post-name /. For the first option, change the "usual" start /% postname% /:
Change the permalink structure as: /% postname% /
To include the category, change a / gory% /%% postname /.
Once done, you have to install the plugin redirects, make sure Manage - Redirection> -> Options, ensuring that the two boxes of monitoring selected URL is set to "message changed." Now you can change the permalinks SEO'd permalinks to your having to do anything, or worry about the consequences of search engines.
WWW vs. non WWW
Something else very good set up now you're on that screen anyway is the root domain: Add WWW / WWW Strip one. Make a choice and put it here, do not allow Therefore, some search engines still can not handle that. And let the redirect index.php / index.html one too, it will not hurt and might even do your WordPress SEO any good.
URL stopwords
The last thing you want to do with permanent links to increase your WordPress SEO, is install SEO Slugs plugin, it automatically stirring words of your slugs once you save a post, so do not be ugly long URLs when you make a style statement, entry title.
Optimize for SEO titles
By default, the title of his blog is "Title» Blog Archive »Keyword Title Message rich. "For your WordPress blog to get the traffic it deserves, it should be reversed for two reasons:
Search engines * to more weight in the first words, so if your keywords are near the top of the page title is more likely that a good position.
* People of exploration results pages to see the first words first. If your keywords at the beginning of your ad on the page is more likely to be clicked.
For more information on how to create good titles for your messages, see this excellent article and video from Aaron Wall: Shares of Google and SEO Friendly Page. I'd rather do this with headspace, as it very, very easy. You should check your header.php however, and make sure the code wp_title () And contains two quotes, so it looks like this: wp_title ('');. This ensures that you have absolute control over the title and not have any discomfort separator there.
After that, enter the configuration of the head, and look something like this for your posts and pages:
Headspace setting posts and pages
For other pages, which have the following values:
* Posts / Pages:% title%%% - Blog Title
* Categories: gory%%% Archives%% page%% - Blog Title
* Tags Archives :%%%% label%%%% Page - Blog Title
* Archives: Blog Archives page%%%% - Blog Title
Headspace, you can also write optimized titles for each particular job, ignoring the settings. This way you have complete control over their titles, and can ensure that titles are WordPress helping your SEO.
1.3. Optimize your description
Give each category a decent description, and using Headspace add that the description of the description of the target, by adding egory_description%%% in the description field. After that, write a description for each position or page that you really want to classify. The description has a very important function: attractive people to click, so make sure that states what's on the page you're clicking towards, and their attention.
Automated descriptions
In my opinion, the generation descriptions of cars is a load of bull, most plugins pick the first sentence, which could be a sentence that has almost nothing to do with the subject, or of punishment to those with the keyword in it, which could be completely wrong to pick up the description. Therefore, the only description is well written handwritten, and if you are thinking of automatic generation of meta description, which may well do nothing and let the search engine control fragment ... If you do not use the description of the goal, the search engine finds keywords in your document, and automatically select a string around it, which gives a bold word or two on the results page.
Auto generate a fragment of a "shortcut", and no shortcuts (WordPress) SEO (none that work anyway).
1.4. Optimize the text more
Other featues clean free space is that you can use to optimize the text more so if you use a label more on the homepage, you can replace the default "Read More" to something that makes sense for all shipments. It's little things like that make your WordPress SEO better.
1.5. Image Optimization
Some often overlooked in WordPress SEO is the way to handle your images. Doing things like writing good alt tags for images and thinking how to name files, you can get some additional traffic from the different image search engines. Along with this, you are helping their less capable readers check out your site in a screen reader, to give meaning to what otherwise hidden to them.
You should, of course, to write good titles and alt tags for every image one, however, if you do not have time for that, there is a plugin that can help you. The plugin is called SEO Friendly Images, and can automatically add the title the message and the name or image of the image's alt and title tag:
SEO friendly images such configurations
2. Optimization Template
2.1. Breadcrumbs
You want to add breadcrumbs to your messages and individual pages. Breadcrumbs are the links, usually above the message of the title, which seem to "Home> Articles>. WordPress SEO" They are good for two things:
* They allow users to navigate easily into place.
* They allow search engines to determine the structure of your site more easily.
These breadcrumbs that link to the homepage, and the level of the post is in. If the message is in several categories that must choose one. For this to work, adapt single.php and page.php in your theme, and use my plugin breadcrumb.
2.2. Securities
Although most themes for WordPress to get this right, make sure that your post title is a
, And nothing else. The name of your blog should only be a
on its cover, and the unique message, and the category pages, should not be more than one
.
These are easy to edit in post.php and page.php templates. For more information about why they are appropriate items important to read this article on semantic HTML and SEO.
2.3. Clean up your code
All that Javascript and CSS files may have template, as to external javascripts and css files, and keep your templates clean, as they are not doing your WordPress SEO at all. This makes your users can cache files on the first charge, and search engines do not have to download most of the time.
2.4. Target speed
A very important factor in the number of pages of a search engine spider your blog every day, as its fast loading blog. You can do two things to increase speed of your WordPress.
1. Optimize the template to make as few database calls when necessary. I've highlighted how to do this in my post about acceleration of WordPress.
2. Installing a plugin cache. I recommend WP-Super-Cache, which is a bit of work to establish, but you should make your blog a lot more fast.
Also, keep in mind that paying less for hosting, it is not wise. If you really want to succeed with your link bait actions, and you want your blog to withstand high loads, go for a good hosting package. Recently I changed myself VPS.net, and proved to be better than anything I've seen in the organization, if you want to know more, be sure to read my article about WordPress hosting.
2.5. Rethinking the sidebar
Do you really need to link all your friends on your site all the blogroll? Or perhaps more intelligent just made on the first page? Google and other search engines today in large as links to discount sites wide, so you're not really doing your friends for that site to the entire link, or helps you: are allowing visitors to leave your site everywhere, when you really want to surf a bit.
The same goes for search engines: in the pages a single message, these links are not necessarily related to the topic at hand, and therefore are not helping at all. Therefore, get rid of them. It likely that there are more widgets like these only make sense in the website, and others just want you in secondary pages.
Someday, probably be able to change this from inside WordPress, now that forces you to use two sidebars, one on the main page and the pages of a sub, or write specific plugins.
3. Advanced WordPress SEO and duplicate content
Once you've done all the basics, you will find that remaining amount of problems a simple thing: duplicate content. Loads of it, actually. Out of the box WordPress comes with a few different types of taxonomy:
1. base date
2. category based
3. tag-based
Along with this, seems to think you really need to be able to click on a page to another page from the main road back to the first entry you've done. Last but not least, each author has his own also file under / author / /, resulting in duplicate content completely single author blogs.
In essence this means that, in the worst cases, a message is available in 5 pages out of the same page must be available. We will remove all groups of duplicate content, even by allowing them to be indexed, but not indexed, and repair problems that come with paging these things.
3.1. Noindex, follow archive pages
Install my robots meta plugin, and make sure that the configuration to avoid indexing all archive pages, like this:
Meta Robots setting to prevent indexing file to improve WordPress SEO
Now the search engine will follow all the links on the pages of files, but do not display the pages in the index. Not everyone will agree to this policy, and others will tell you to show only a fragment of each message in the archive page. That goes to work but in my opinion totally throw better.
3.2. Turn off unnecessary files
If your blog is a blog of an author, or if you do not think that the files author, use the robots-meta plugin to disable the author's files. Also, if you do not think you need a file based on date: off. Even if you do not use these files in your template, someone could link to them and break your WordPress SEO ...
3.3. Pagination
Third, you want to make sure that if a robot goes to a category page, you can reach all pages without any underlying problem. Otherwise, if you have a lot of posts a category, a bot could be going back 10 pages before being able to find the link to one of your previous posts impressive ...
No solution easy. Jaimie Sirovich Pagerfix wrote a plugin that helps you make your page look like this:
Best page to increase your WordPress SEO
To get that, install this plugin, and change this section in its fi index.php:
As follows:
pager_fix ("" "" "" "" Previous Page "," Next Page "" "Strong");
>
Making the index.php, the archives.php and all archive templates that you may have.
3.4. Nofollowing unnecessary links
An easier way to increase your WordPress SEO is to stop linking your user name and registration pages for each page in your blog. It Same goes for your RSS feeds, subscribe by e-mail link, etc. Robots Meta has an option to nofollow all your login and registration links. You may have to go RSS links and nofollow hand. If you are using the meta widget, you may want to activate the meta robots replacing it with one that has nofollow links.
4. The structure of the site for high rankings
The blogs are spidered so easily because of its structure of categories, labels, etc: All articles are well linked, and usually the profit margin is nice and clean. However, this has a price: its strength is diluted ranking. Are diluted one simple thing: comments.
4.1. Pages instead of posts
You've probably noticed by now, or we're seeing now, this post WordPress SEO is actually ... not a job. This is a page. Why? Well for several reasons. First, this article should be a "daughter" of pages My WordPress page, to be in the right place on this blog. Second, to qualify for the term [WordPress SEO] This article needs to have the density keywords correct. And that's where things go wrong. Comments destroying the density of keywords carefully constructed.
That's why I decided to make the Most of my important papers on the pages. This way, you can easily update and make a new post about what has changed.
4.2. New wine in an old bottle
If a post on his blog becomes incredibly popular and starts to rank for a keyword well, as happened to me for WordPress SEO You could do the following:
* Create a new page with updated content and improved
* Change the shot of the old entry to post-original name
* Publish the new page in the URL of the former position, or URL forwarding the old entry to the new URL
* Send an e-mail to everyone who linked his old post that has been updated and improved in his former post
* Wait for the links to go again;
* Rank even higher for desired doneness, has now arrived:
or more control over keyword density
or more links pointing to Article
or the ability to keep updating Article as you see fit to improve the content and classification
Some among you will say: there could be 301 redirect the old to the new entry with the same effect. Right. Except: lose the comments in the previous post, in my opinion disrespectful to people who took the time to comment, and 301 redirects take a little time sometimes. Of course you must try this technique with great care and not abuse it to classify other products, but I think we can do for all. For example this article: if you came here through a social networking site like Sphinn, expecting an article about WordPress SEO, which is exactly what you have!
4.3. Link to related posts
One way to get search engines to get to their older content is a little easier, increasing your WordPress SEO capabilites far is using a related posts plugin. These plugins search through its database of messages to find messages with the same subject, and add links to these posts.
There are a load of these available, but just use the plugin that comes with the Simple Tags, as I have found that the easiest and best so far.
5. Conversion Optimization
Get readers to subscribe!
Many of the bloggers still think that because your blog is a blog, do not have to optimize anything. Wrong order for people to link to you have to read your blog. What do you think it's easier: get someone who is visiting your blog regularly visit and link to your blog, or get someone to visit your blog for the first time link to your blog away? Right.
That is conversion optimization is vital for bloggers as well: they have to learn to test your call actions on his blog so that more people subscribe either via email or RSS. (Oh by the way, if you are not subscribed to this blog, do it now!)
One of the things I've found to be very important, and most bloggers seem to have found this is a BIG RSS subscription button is very important because it provides a how to subscribe by email. They even offer daily and weekly email subscription options, with aweber (AFF), and have found that people tend to really like the options as well.
Another thing to keep in mind is that people want to subscribe to your blog. If you've finished reading his article, and we liked indeed, it would be the ideal time to reach them, right? That's why more and more people are adding lines like this to the end of your messages: "I liked this entry Subscribe to me? RSS feed and get more!"
Another great time for people to subscribe is when people just commented on his blog for the first time, for which I use my own comment redirect plugin. Which brings me to the next important aspect of WordPress SEO:
6. Comment optimization
Getting readers involved
Comments are one of the most important aspects of blogging. As Wikipedia says:
The readers' ability to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs.
Comments are not only nice because people tell you how special you are, or who has committed an error, or anything else I have to say. Most everything is fine, because it shows commitment. And the commitment is one of the factors important to get people to link to you: to show they care, and open the conversation, now all you have to do is respond, and you are building a relationship!
6.1. How to get people to comment
The easiest way to get people to do whatever is asked to do so. Write in an attractive style, and then ask your blog readers opinion, his views on history, etc.
Another important things is your comment links. It your comments link "no comment"? " Or is that "No comments yet, your thoughts are welcome» "Do you feel the difference? You can change this by opening your index.php template, the search comments_popup_link () and modify the text within that function.
6.2. Link with commentators
Another thing to do is to thank people when they commented on his blog. Not all the time because it's annoying, but do it the first time is a very good idea.
Justin Shattuck felt the same, and has created the Enjoy comments plugin sends an email after someone has made his first comment. This email is a message that you can go with, for example, the URL of the feed, and in my case, a newsletter subscription URL, etc. Please note that some people think it is spam, and that laws in some countries may prohibit the use of it. I can not say that because I'm not a lawyer.
Another option, which is a little less annoying / spam is the installation of my comment redirect plugin. This plugin allows you to redirect people who made his first comment to a "thank you" of the page.
6.3. Keeping people in conversation
Now that people have joined the conversation in your blog, be sure you are in conversation. So you have to install the plugin subscribe to comments, which allows people to subscribe to a thread of comments as they would on a forum, and sends them an e-mail for each comment. This way, you can keep the conversation going, and maybe your readers will give new insights of the new posts.
7. Outside SEO blog site
If you've followed all the advice on WordPress SEO, you have a great opportunity to become successful, both as a blogger and search engines. Now the last step seems easy, but it is not. Exit and talk to people online.
7.1 Follow the commentators
There has been a movement in the web from some time is called "It's a comment - I follow." They want you to remove nofollow tag from their comments to "reward" visitors. Now I agree, but ... You do a lot of spam once your WordPress blog a blog becomes well positioned ... What I argue, however, is that you keep your visitors! Go to their websites, and leave a comment on one of your articles, good insightful comment, so they respect you more.
If you thought to be a lot of work, they realize that, on average, about 1% of visitors actually leave a comment. This is a group of people who have to care!
7.2. Using Twitter
Twitter is a cool / micro-blogging chatting / whatever you want to call. Almost all the "cool" people are there, and read their tweets more often than they read their email, do not even know how to reach them via e-mail.
To start, if you use tools or Twitter WordTwit all of your messages can be announced over Twitter, which usually yields a few good early readers! People will be even happier to comment on Twitter, which could enter into a further conversation or two.
7.3. Find related blogs, and the work
To align for certain keywords, go to Google Blogsearch, and see which blogs rank in the top 10 for those keywords. Read the blogs, start posting insightful comments, monitoring from office to do a post on your own blog and link to them: communicate! The only way to get links that have to be range is part of the community.
8. Conclusions on WordPress SEO
This guide offers plenty of things you can do in your blog. Va technical advice, tips for conversion to advice of contents, discussion boards, and much in between. There is one drawback though: if you want to rank for competitive terms, which will really make the most of it.
