Help blogs: Make custom blogs?

I am a web designer and I am new to blogging. A potential client asked me about putting a blog on your page web. However, I've never done a blog before (mostly because I never ordered). I've looked at WordPress and it looks very confusing and uncustomizable completely (as you can not do your own customized page and then just put a piece of code where you want a comment area that you have to use a template). I'm not sure about the details of what the customer wants, but I assumed they want their new site to allow users to make comments. How I can do this? Anyone know of an online blogging service or, more importantly, knows a tutorial that can be used to establish this? Also, please do not include suggestions that involve heavy or advanced programming. I am a designer, not a programmer. Thank you all in advance!
