WordPress is undoubtedly the most used CMS (Content Management System) online. It is partly due to its flexibility as a blog platform, and partly due to the large amount of plugins and themes by its large user community.

However, this huge variety of plugins can easily confuse a new user. So for those of you who are not sure the connectors are used, here's a list of the top 5 WordPress plugins to use:

1. Akismet - Akismet is pre-packaged when you install WordPress. It is done by the same company that makes WordPress. Akismet is a plug lock spam works very efficiently to block spam in the comments.

If you run a great blog, you really need this plugin. The amount of spam that makes rounds online is tremendous. If you were to moderate these comments one by one, I would have to spend hours to maintain your blog. Akismet does all the automated process saves countless hours of effort.

2. All in One SEO - What good is a blog if nobody reads it? Yet in one SEO plugin, all your site needs SEO will be served automatically. It will create meta tags, meta descriptions, etc. on their own. If you want your blog be found by Google or other search engines, this is a complement essential.

3. Google XML Sitemaps - This plugin automatically creates a map of your blog to help Google spiders in indexing it. Sitemaps are just what you think it means: a map of your site. They can make it much easier for Google to find and index your site, so this plugin is a necessity, regardless of the size of your blog.

4. Click a Plugin Updater - If you're like me, you probably hate to update the plugins one by one. Most plugins that several updates a month, and updating them can be a real headache. Click a Plugin Updater simplifies the process by giving you the option to update all plugins with one click. A huge time saver, if you are using too many plugins.

5. Backup WordPress Database - You never know when an unfortunate accident occurs to your blog. Once, a great blog of mine got hacked and so I lost my database. I had a copy of security database, so I had to create everything from scratch (something that took me over 100 hours).
