How to get rid of spam in my WordPress blog?

My blog is not hosted on WordPress, however I installed WordPress using Fantastico in the cPanel for my website. I let Akismet in WP, but I need an API key which means that they must register for WordPress? If I do this, will it work with my blog is not a "example.wordpress.com the blog, but my own domain? If this work is there plugins that will work? Every day hundreds of spam comments I am: (
