Can I use my Mac to host a blog?

Ok, I am a total novice when it comes to blogs. I really do not understand how the whole thing really works, but I've been desperately trying to get a simple running independent blog for cheap, and it looks good. So far, I've followed some instructions on installing MAMP on my mac software and now I have software installed wordpress.org using my mac as the host. However, at the end of this installation, approx. $ 60 a year? or I can use my mac and this software MAMP as host, use the wordpress database, then buy a domain and upload the whole blog to the domain? Is is to get a blog up, go to blogger.com or wordpress.com register. The host for you and not charge anything, and then not have to worry about all this!
