Is it completely necessary to use WordPress?

Because of my studies I am creating a website from scratch using HTML and CSS. But I want to be able to update regularly using CMS, after investigating, I decided to use WordPress .. I do not want the site is fully WordPress since reading can not be edited HTML and CSS templates and I want complete control of design and I am creating the website myself. So is there a way around this? Perhaps using only its plugins, such as galleries and news posting abilities, etc. (it is updating the news sections, galleries / images and some links I'd like to be managed by WordPress makes things easier to update. Any suggestions, please)
