Report of the International Seminar on innovative English Language Learning
An International Seminar on English Language Teaching innovation was organized by the Centre for English Language Teaching at the University of Kerala and Government College for Women, Trivandrum on July 26, 2010.
This was one of the seminars was planned, organized and with a surprisingly short space of two days. Those who have made it possible to include some dedicated faculty Govt. College for women, the Head of English Language Teaching Centre, Dr. Jamuna and scholar rather modest and soft spoken from the UK, Dr. Elizabeth Holt Christ Church University, Canterbury, who gave his consent to be the main speaker-cum-foreign guest delegate.
As had contacted Dr. Jamuna personally, and invited a few professors and research fellows, they too had come to attend the seminar and even had some articles in their field of expertise ready to be submitted.
Although the state of Kerala had been experiencing heavy rain of recent days, on the day of the seminar, Monday, July 26, 2010, the sky was clear and sunny. The venue was the Seminar Hall with the Department of Music, from which emanates the tunes blessed dedicated to the Hindu goddess of learning, Saraswati. The early arrivals had registered its name and began the session around a half past ten.
The meeting was welcomed by Dr. Jamuna, the Head of English Language Teaching Center at the University of Kerala. The following are excerpts from his speech:
- We keep saying ELT, but rarely discussed. As teachers of literature assumes that we have the necessary skill. Only after years teaching us realize that we need to understand much about ELT.
- When the British arrived, we wanted to drive them out and we did. They were leaving behind two things: the English language and Cricket ... and we must fervently clung to them.
- We must realize that India have had teachers very good English. Recently, a few teachers who came from South Africa admitted that had the best education teachers who originally belonged to Kerala.
- Somehow we have assumed that English is always correct British variety and we are fortunate to have a teacher in Britain as the main speaker.
From the presidential address by Mr. P. Vijayakumar, Head of English Department, Govt. College for Women, Trivandrum:
- As English teachers tend to lose concentration.
- It's a shame that students with a degree first class MA in English literature are unable to make a written summary of evidence on a topic related to banking when he applied for a job in the Techno Park in Trivandrum.
- In Kerala there were instances where the English by scholars in English was incomprehensible to the students. So such seminars is expected to make a "difference".
- In the last century, the Parsis, Brahmins and English used for power and control over 'knowledge'. So in a state like Kerala, if properly taught by teachers of English, chances are that the English language to become an agent of empowerment of the disadvantaged that is, the lower classes.
- Do not forget that our main task is to teach and not to pretend to be another set of Brahmin priests who chant the mantra of the Theory Literature!
- It is depressing to note that most teachers take the example of the UGC are being pushed to seminar rooms, when in fact expected to waste your time to help their students become real power through a proper teaching of English.
Of the presidential address by Dr. Sajeev Rose, a professor at the host university:
- The Government. Women's College is an institution pioneer who began processing the English language in India. The British have given us a valid currency for the use of English. In India are intellectually efficient manage and transact it. However, as the previous speaker said, which have deprived millions of people to gain power through the use of English in India.
- It is a fact that the previous generation of teachers in India can communicate properly, even deal with the subtle nuances of language students. But today we have to teach Communicative English separately!
- It is a fact while teaching English today, we have recourse to the sociological aspects, psychological and technological.
- If we teach this language to empower other women, is a promise for the future, which will undoubtedly be transferred to the family through women.
- We are eager to hear our keynote speaker and I think it's going to say is something that every researcher and research director should listen: .. It is time for the research supervisor to reject academic hegemony that he / she takes and let to believe that what he / she has to say the last word! We live in modern times and need for post multiple interdisciplinary studies. We have to be open to new things Although the assessment of assignments and lectures we will try to accommodate the fresh in the minds of the young!
Dr. Anitha Dayamanthi, another faculty of the host university, offering a vote of thanks, said the stage has been set by the speakers and now is the time able to discuss how to change language teaching English in India.
Dr. Elizabeth Hoult, Director of Transfer Knowledge of Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK, gave a presentation titled "Reading Bourdieu and Cixous to recognize and escape from the falsity of the academic writing. "illustrated his point by using images and quotes from both study and authentic texts in your PowerPoint presentation. [Please
