WordPress Coding Structure

How I can change my WordPress permalinks structure number used. Htaccess?
Right now my WordPress permalink structure is defined as the default, but I like to switch to digital. I know that to change this in the configuration of WordPress, but I hear it is also necessary to add a line of code for me. Htaccess redirect errors to avoid. I found the file. Htaccess, but I'm not sure what line of code assumes that I should be adding. Help is appreciated. Thank you.
If you have a recent WordPress (2.x), updated. Htaccess so that if you can, and if not, will tell mod_rewrite exactly what you need to add lines. (The only reason I can think that you could not be outside the permissions.)
