WordPress Clients

Now I've never used wordpress, but I decided to take a look at it anyway. I am not able to see the theme files. A Google search told me that I would to connect to the server using an FTP client to view and modify the theme files. My questions are: 1. Do I need to download and install an FTP client on my laptop to accomplish this? My opinion is yes. If so, what are some good FTP clients out there? 2. Do I have to install wordpress on my laptop? I'm not trying to create a new WordPress site, just tinker around with an existing site. Thanks for the replies!
