Why is finding an answer to my problem so difficult fricken WordPress to find?

I have to find a subject or a way to create one if not a single fact to make a wordpress site for a directory of items such as ezinearticles.com. I need to homapge to have a list of all categories and subcategories where items can be sent. Also I have a way for people to register on the site, create an account and submit articles of their own. / I been looking everywhere online for an answer to this, and I can not find it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
