WordPress Clone Software
Operating your business on free software
Before opening your wallet and give cash or credit card for the beautiful new box of Windows 7 or MS Office, you may want to consider trying to free software, also known as "open source". New versions of open source software are really very nice and very capable than their commercial counterparts.
Here are some of my favorites, most of which I use:
Linux
This is a clone of the old UNIX operating system (OS), originally developed back in the early 1960. Linux started as a school project of Linus Torvalds in the 1990s. Since then it has become many different "flavors" really called distribution. The code of the core components of the operating system has always been open source, meaning that any programmer can take the code and develop a version customized for specific uses. Developers have created the popular distributions like Red Hat, SUSE open, Fedora, Knoppix and many others. Each distribution is completed different desktop versions, such as GNOME and KDE, the two most popular, and usually a complete set of applications some of which are listed below. Linux has, or may have the appearance of Windows, but in reality is very different on the inside. Advantages of Linux - is free, flexible rock stable. A disadvantage is that if you do not is a "techie", then you may have trouble running some applications the way you want them to. Some applications work differently Linux in the Windows version, but are usually small differences.
Note that outdoor applications below code also has Windows and even Mac Intel-based versions, in some cases. I have a dual boot system with Windows XP PC and open SUSE works very well.
OpenOffice (OO) Suite - MS Office Alternative
This is a clone of Microsoft Office suite - word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, drawing and database applications. This is a very capable set is very close to the capabilities of Microsoft Office. A very useful feature I like is the built in the PDF converter. Any document to write in OO can be exported and saved as a PDF file, saving the need to install a PDF printer driver that would be purchased.
Firefox - Web Browsing
This is my favorite browser. I think it's much faster than IE (Internet Explorer), and there is a whole set of add-ons, themes and gadgets that have been added in version 3.6 of the latest updates. However, still use IE, rarely as some sites (very few) work better with IE.
Thunderbird - Mail Client
Thunderbird email client is much better than Outlook, and much safer that way. Has also been recent improvements and enhancements, making it the most flexible and customizable as Firefox. Currently I have a dozen email accounts with more than 30,000 email messages accumulated over the years and is still very stable. Also installed a plug-in calendar that makes it like Outlook and works very well too.
WordPress - Blog platform
No one can create a blog website with this great open source blogging platform. This is actually an application that runs on a web server rather than your office PC. There a multitude of themes and plug-ins, many of them free, which add to the variety of styles, appearance of the site. I recommend using WordPress on a server that supports the "Cpanel" interface.
GIMP - Graphics
They call the poor Photoshop, but GIMP is capable of. I use it for all my needs graphs. Some of the controls and terminology takes time to adjust. GIMP is much more sophisticated than MS Paint, and is about 90% as capable as Photoshop - for less. Nothing is better than $ 0.
GnuCash - Accounting
All previous applications currently use, but GnuCash is I'm looking to try soon. GnuCash is an accounting software package from the likes of Quickbooks. I have used Quickbooks, but I want to give GnuCash a try. I that looks very promising and it's always good to have alternatives at hand.
Therefore, I would recommend that open source applications to an opportunity. There are many who are not on this list, but these are the most important. You may be pleasantly surprised and your wallet will be happier too.
