My Internet Marketing Journey to Success 07

Choosing the Right Domain Name

When picking a domain name, make sure you get a .com URL.  .net or .org are second choices.  Everything else should be avoided.

Also, google, bing and yahoo all know that spammers get domain names with only a one year registration length.  Therefore, if you are building a destination site go ahead and register the site for five years.

In general, I still try to get a domain name with my business or product name in it.  For example: http://menspolarizedsunglasses.com or http://onemedicalinsurance.com.  For my survival topic project I am going to go to the http://adwords.google.com site and do some keyword research around the terms survival and survivalism.

I buy almost all of my domain names from NameCheap because of their customer service and the ease of using their back-office.  They also don’t try to upsell the crap out of you like the elephant killers at Go-Daddy.

Once you pick out a domain name, go to http://namecheapcoupon.com/ and grab the monthly discount code that you can use it at NameCheap.com to register your domain name.

There are a lot of good hosting companies out there.  I have used BlueHost in the past, but I will no longer be using them because of their extremely slow servers.  I now use NameCheap (which just got into the hosting business), but mostly Hostgator.

You can find dozens of videos on YouTube that will show you how to register a domain name and set it up on Hostgator.

I settled on http://survivalskillsandgear.com for my new project.  Stay tuned, next you need to set it up your WordPress blog the CORRECT way.
