The best simple software for Webmasters Busys

Here are some programs that can not be ignored. They're free, and being a webmaster much easier.

A CGI script to execute commands on the server, even if your web server will not give you telnet access. It's also good to get to the files generated by other writing systems that are owned by 'nobody' user, instead of your username. Have you ever tried deleting it? Well, now you can.

Tracking System http://www.xav.com/ AXS Visitor

A hit very well against. Pretty simple set up, if you use footer files in place. Provides detailed information. Much better than the stats software that comes with your hosting account.

Swap.pl

A Perl script text substitute. Very useful if you are not familiar with Unix commands. Making changes to the entire site within seconds. Original author's site does not list any more. Still can be found through a search engine (hint, hint).

FTP Explorer http://www.ftpx.com

The charm of this software is that it seems much to the Windows shell, and therefore makes it a little less intimidating FTP'ing for the novice webmaster.

Putty Telnet / SSH Client http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/ ~ Sgtatham / putty /

A nice simple, yet sophisticated, free telnet and SSH client. You can run from a floppy. Useful for the mobile webmaster.

Email Remover 2.4

Not available on the website, but can be found by searching Google for a file called 'eremov24.zip. This is a verifier e-mail account. You can run from a floppy disk and can check multiple email accounts. Allows you to highlight and delete the spam emails and download mail if necessary. WARNING: You have an error. Do not change the order of email messages in the window before removing the software, you will end up erasing the wrong ones.

RFTP a file called 'rftp.exe.

If you see a pattern emerging, then let me clarify: the last three programs can be run from the same disc. You can leave your laptop at home and work on your website cafes.

The only thing left would be a WYSIWYG editor HTML that can be run from a floppy, that would be asking too much. However, http://www.mambo.com Mambo content management system comes with a pre-installed. Also there is a plug-in WYSIWYG for http://wordpress.org/ WordPress blog software.
