Every Internet marketer needs to be alert to all the new marketing fads and money making systems that are being pushed. If you are an opportunity chaser and don’t concentrate on what is really important to your business you will fail.

I know that every time I go into email I have a plethora of “buy this system and make a billion bucks in 7 days” offers.  Some even tell me I can do it in my pajamas.  And who in their right mind can ignore all those bikini clad babes hanging on that new Ferrari you are going to be able to afford after you purchase this new get rich quick scheme.

Now I must admit, that some of those tools being offered can help with your Internet marketing, but can you afford the diversion from your mission at hand.  First you buy one tool, then you buy another, then you find yourself broke or you haven’t done a thing for your business because you’ve been dorking around with all those new Internet marketing toys you’ve just bought. (Yes, I have been guilty of this, that’s how I know the problem so well.)

Shut out all the noise! As a business person there are only a few things you should concentrate on and ignore all those flim-flam, buy this product and be famous offers or all those new marketing gizmos and tricks.

There are only THREE legitimate ways to success on the Internet.

  1. Links
  2. Content
  3. List Building

Links – if you have a lot of links tracking back to your business website or blog you will get traffic.  You can pay for links (e.g. Google Adwords, Microsoft Ad Center or other paid advertising services) or you can grow them organically.  Examples of organic links are creating a BizNik profile, a Google/Yahoo/Bing profile, publishing articles, being involved in social networks and on and on.  The ways to build your reputation, brand yourself and attract traffic to you business are endless.

Content – If you have good content on your website and blog, grow it in a consistent fashion, and focus on a specific niche you will also attract traffic.  Of course you need to know how to get the world to know about your content, but that is something anyone can learn and master.

Links and Content – combine linking strategies WITH good content you are going to be a killer on the Internet.  Building a massive spiderweb of links and content using Social Networking, Videos, blogging, mobile marketing, and more provides you with the opportunity to rise above the competition.

List Building – You’ve heard the term “the money’s in the list”. It’s true. Use your content and linking successes to build your list of prospects and fans, then build relationships and trust, and eventually convert your loyal base to customers.

Links and Content and List Building – Combine all of these together and you have all the pieces in place to be a marketing machine!

Now, all of what I have said about the above tactics is simplified and provided at a high level.  We could spend days talking about each of these topics.  My point here is that I want to get the message out that lack of focus, being an opportunity chaser, and not sticking with the basics can kill you.

Stick with the basics just like the 3 R’s.
