In this post we are going to cover the installation and use of the Google XML Sitemap WordPress plugin and why we need it in building our http://survivalskillsandgear.com authority site. This is a project blog we are working on with the goal of having authority website (in this case a blog) that we can monetize and make some money from.

The plug in used to tell the search engines where on your site they can search and how often they should search it.

This plugin generates a XML-Sitemap compliant sitemap of your WordPress blog. This format is supported by Ask.com, Google, YAHOO and MSN Search.

For setting up the plugin you can pretty much use the default except in the Sitemap Content section check the Include Static Pages option.

Keep the frequencies the way they are.

In the Priorities section change StaticePages to 0.9, categories to 0.8 and Minimum post priority to 0.5.  Set the last three on the list to 0.0 as we don’t care about those.

Remember to click once on the “Rebuild Sitemap” button  to create your sitemap the first time. If you receive an error that the sitemap files could not be written, you need to check your Privacy settings to make sure your blog can be seen by everyone.  (We are going to keep the Privacy settings to private until the blog is completely ready.)
