16 How to Moderate Blog Comments and Spam

My Internet Marketing Strategies Journey to Success

Comments left on your site which are not on topic or relevant, are most likely spam and you should get rid of them by selecting either the “spam” or the “trash” options.

In general, if the comment seems sincere and actually says something about the topic it can be approved.  If the comment has links in it back to the author’s own business it is usually spam.  If it says something like “Nice blog….” or “Great article….” It is trash.

Go to the “Comments” menu option. You will be able to tell what is spam and what isn’t.  If the comment ADDs value to your blog then keep it.  Otherwise delete it.

Any pingbacks you get you should mark as trash because the really do not any value.

WordPress comes with Akismet, which is a spam filterer.  Make sure you have the Akismet plugin activated.  You will need to get an Akisment activation code which is explained in the plugin under the Akisment Configuration menu option.

Used by millions, Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from comment and trackback spam. It keeps your site protected from spam even while you sleep. To get started: 1) Click the “Activate” link to the left of this description, 2) Sign up for an Akismet API key, and 3) Go to your Akismet configuration page, and save your API key.

Hint: Once you register for an Akisment Key, save it in a text file.  Any time you create another WordPress blog you can use the same number.

Another Hint: Download and install the SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam plugin. This adds a CAPTCHA anti-spam method to your WordPress comment form, registration form, login, or all. This prevents spam from automated bots.
