Permalink Friendly Settings for your WordPress Blog

My Internet Marketing Journey to Success – 09

Now we are going to get into some of the fun, but tedious stuff.  I remember the very first time I ever set up a blog.  I was terrified that I was going to break something.  Don’t worry, you won’t break anything.  If you do, you will have a backup in place so you can correct any mistakes.

One time, I wiped out 23 blogs by accident.  I had to call the hosting company and have them do a complete restore on my entire account.  Yikes, that was scary.

To be friendly with the search engines there are certain things we need to do a certain way.  (I am assuming you know how to access your wordpress dashboard and log in to it.  If not, there are a gazzillion youtube videos that will show you how.)

Here are some general rules I am following in setting up my authority site project – http://survivalskillsandgear.com.

1. I am using the FlexSqueezeLite theme for this project.  Flexibilty3 is a similar theme that I often use. The choice of theme is yours and there’s a lot of free ones out there as well at wordpress.org.

2.  It is important to custom structure the Permalinks which are found within the Settings section of the WordPress Dashboard.

Permalinks need to be changed because the way it is set up, out of the box, with wordpress is not very friendly to the search engines.  The “?p=123″ doesn’t tell the search engines much about what your post is all about.  The “?” means it is a dynamic page structure and the search engines don’t like them much. The search engines prefer static pages

Go into the Permalinks settings and set the Permalinks to a “Custom Structure”. You will be changing the “?p=123″ to the following……

Check the “Custom Structure” radio button.  Then enter in “%postname%.html” (without the quote marks). Some people prefer to use “%postname%”.  I wish I could explain the differences to you, but I am not that technical. :)
